Assisi Protagonist of the World Day of Prayer for the care of creation
In 1989 the Orthodox Church declares September 1st as the “World Day of Prayer For the Care of Creation”; since then many other Christian churches joined this initiative. Pope Francis joined it recently in 2015.
In 2007, during the third European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu (Romania), the “Creation time” has been extended to the length of one month, ending on October 4th, feast of Saint Fancis of Assisi.
In his message of September 1st 2016, Pope Francis too reminded this “Creation Time”.
In Italy, where on September 1st occurs the 12th National Day for the Safeguarding of Creation, the bishops worked on a message for celebrating the day about “Travellers on God’s Earth”. This year the National Celebration will be hosted by the Diocese of Gubbio from September 1st to 3rd, but the event will begin before, on August 31st in Assisi, where, in cooperation with the Sacred Convent and the Municipality of Assisi, there will be a conference about Ecomomy and Creation, treating in particular the theme of “disinvestment of fossil sources and ethic and sustainable investment for the local development and work”. In the evening there will be a vigil of prayer and in the morning of September 1st a pilgrimage on foot will leave from the Santuario della Spogliazione in Assisi to Gubbio as a symbolic ecumenic action. On September 2nd in Gubbio there will be a workshop on “Responsible Travellers in the Common House” and on September 3rd, at the arrival of the pilgrims, there will be the Holy Mass in live streaming on Channel RAI 1.
