PILGRIMAGE TO ASSISI

Three Pilgrimage Proposals

From 25 May 230, when the mortal remains of St. Francis were brought from his Parish Church of St. George (where the Basilica of St. Clare is presently) to his final resting place under the altar of the Lower Church in the new Basilica dedicated to him, his Tomb has been place of pilgrimage for Christians. In 1261, the Bishop of Pisa, Federico Visconti, wrote: "The man of the spirit must induce the sinner to confession and to embark on a journey of penance, that is, to go as a Pilgrim overseas (to Jerusalem), or to St. James (at Compostela), or to St. Peter's (in Rome) or to St. Francis (in Assisi). Oh, how many today are men and women who go to the tomb of St.

Francis, to do penance for their sins." Within 30 years, St. Francis' Tomb became the fourth most important Christian pilgrimage destination!

A pilgrimage is a spiritual journey that, as we follow in the footsteps of the Saints, leads us to God and helps us recognize our sinfulness and find our true selves, and helps us make new choices to follow Christ Jesus and to embark on a new path of life.

Assisi, the Franciscan places, and the nearby territory, offer many opportunities for making a pilgrimage, to reflect and change our life as we follow the proposed paths of holiness. Assisi especially offers pilgrims many opportunities to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare.
