The grace of work
02/12/2020
Benedict's motto "ora et labora" introduces into the circuit of the European economic system 'two' distinct actions, prayer and work, which take place in the stabilitas loci, that is within the monastery; St. Francis eight centuries later, going among the people, marks a kind of revolution: pilgrim around the world, prays while working and working while praying. Hence the expression "grace of work" (Regola bullata, chap. V) because it serves to humanize and perfect oneself, the work one does and others; it opens to collaboration, relationships and fraternity. The conception of work as grace, and no longer as coercion, fatigue and punishment, means recognizing it as participation in God's creative act. The work must be done with "fidelity and devotion", and it is prayer: singing of the industriousness of each one with that of all the creatures of the universe is praise to the Creator in his magnificence and mercy.
