The Photographic Archive of the Sacro Convento was born in the 1960s, assuming a role of institutional and cultural significance. It preserves visual documentation produced and stored over the years inside the Basilica and Sacro Convento; it provides support and assistance to scholars interested in historical-artistic heritage; and it guarantees the necessary reference documentation for restoration work. In recent times, with the definitive establishment of digital imaging, the archive has become the place for the preservation of the memory of pastoral and cultural activities of the Basilica.

The Archive's heritage includes a historical trove of vintage photos, a rich catalogue of printed images, slides and negatives from the second half of the 20th century, and about 500,000 digital images. Numerous videos are also stored in analog and digital format.
